How do I get started kayaking in Illinois?

I am currently in South Africa and have fallen in love with paddling. I want to continue (as long as the weather allows) once I get home, but I have no idea where to start. I tried looking at clubs and websites, but it hasn’t been helpful.

   I would start in the water. This America, you don’t need a club or website to be able to toss a kayak into a lake or river.

   1) Return to Illinois.

   2) Buy Kayak, paddle and safety equipment.

   3) Find lake or river suitable to your needs and skill level. You can probably do this by contacting local Parks and Recreation departments or the U.S. Forestry Service or the equivalent Illinois Bureau.

   4) If #3 doesn’t work out, just look on a map, find some water and toss in the kayak and jump in!

   5) Paddle your little heart out.

   6) HAVE SAFE FUN & ENJOY!
