40+ MPG Lean N Steer ® Power Kayak Introduction (short version)

December 30th, 2011 |

Lean ‘N’ Steer® powered kayak introduction - A true small powerboat that can be handled by just one person. Quick and easy to unload, set up, and operate without assistance. Perfect for fishermen, photographers, birders, naturalists, cruising, or just having fun. A powerboat - but can still be paddled like a recreational kayak. Unlike jon boats, canoes, inflatables, folding boats, and other powered kayaks, is lighter, stronger, easier to transport and use, offers below deck protected storage, and is built to last a lifetime. Stable and safe, with 10-13 mph top speed on only 2 hp, with 40 - 48 mpg economy. Tough, strong, and durable due to our very high impact composite construction. Doesn’t warp in the sun like cheap “roto molded” boats, yet not brittle like other fiberglass - Kevlar®, carbon fiber boats. Not pretty, but tough. We expect you to use these boats. Can be transported on any car with a roof rack. For more information: LeanNSteerkayaks, com or Poweredkayak.net production credits: video production, music © Scott A. How To Self Rescue While Kayaking Video

December 29th, 2011 |

www.rei.com Brad, an REI Outdoor School instructor, demonstrates in the video how to do a self rescue after your kayak capsizes. After you’ve done your wet exit (see related video) get hold of your paddle and your boat so the wind doesn’t take them away. Get your paddle float, which you stored in an easily accessible place. Put one leg into the submerged cockpit so that you can keep both hands free without your boat getting away from you. Inflate the paddle float and slide its sleeve over the paddle blade and secure it to the paddle shaft with its clips. Now flip your kayak back over by reaching under the water and pulling the far combing towards yourself while pushing on the near-side combing. Position your paddle perpendicular across the boat, with the paddle float acting as an outrigger. Give a kick and pull yourself up, keeping your weight low and spread between the boat and the paddle float outrigger. Pump out the water using your bilge pump and put the spray skirt back on the cockpit combing. You’re all set to go!

Staying Dry in a Recreational Kayak using Dryak rather than drip rings

December 12th, 2011 |

This shows a revolutionary kayak paddle drip ring that actually captures the drips from a kayak paddle and hold them while the paddle is elevated. This keeps the kayaker drier than conventional drip rings which only define where the water drips. This can keep you and your gear such as cameras, GPS, cell phone, binoculars, and lunch drier.

How to repair punctures in PVC inflatable boat, raft or kayak.

December 9th, 2011 |

Visit www.boatstogo.com for more info. If you are losing air pressure, (aside from pressure loss commonly caused by colder temperatures), check the boat over for leaks. Start by checking the valves first. The best tool to find leaks is soapy water in a spray bottle. A leaky valve is rare, but if you do find a leak we can send you a replacement valve. We recommend mixing soap and water in a spray bottle. Spray around the valve. If you see bubbles forming, check your valve fitting and base and be sure the valve insert is screwed on tight. You can apply glue from the repair kit to seal small leaks around the valve or holes where the nylon string enters the valve assembly. If you continue to have problems with the valve, it’s probably time to order a new one. To find tiny leaks, take the floor boards out, fully inflate the boat until it’s hard to the touch. Put some liquid detergent in a bucket of water and scrub it all over the boat with rag or big wash brush. Watch for elusive or tiny bubbles. When you find the first leak, keep looking. You might as well fix them all at the same time! Remember, the number one cause of slow leaks is due to poorly fitted valves. Unscrew the valve and clean the area. Make sure the little rubber O-rings are still good. They are the cheapest repair possible. If you have no luck finding a slow leak with air bubbles, inflate the boat to it’s maximum air pressure and try to listen for the leak. If you can narrow the area down, return with a spray

Kayak trolling motor and efficient prop trials.

December 2nd, 2011 |

Testing a 40lb trolling motor on a Cobra Fish N Dive kayak. The first bit of footage shows use with the standard propeller and the second bit shows use with an 10 x 4 model aircraft propeller. We tested the standard prop as well as 3 other props of varying pitches. The standard prop gave a top speed of around 8km/h and drew 33 amps whilst the aircraft prop that came out in front gave a top speed of around 10km/h and drew 29 amps. The other pitches (10×6 and 10×8) gave slightly better speed but used too much power. Next job is to further cut down the shaft of the motor as optimal depth has been discovered and then set about installing a spinner to increase efficiency.
