AirKayaks.com: Single or Double Spray Decks for Advanced Elements Convertible Kayak

October 31st, 2011 |

Expand the versatility of your Advanced Elements convertible kayak with the optional single or double spray decks. The spray decks convert your Convertible kayak from an open-deck design to an enclosed two seater with the double deck, or an enclosed one seater with the single deck. The deck system keeps water and wind out during chilly or inclement weather. The coaming tubes allow you to attach optional spray skirts for even more protection from the elements. The spray decks are made of the same rugged nylon ripstop material as the Convertible. At Airkayaks, we’re always happy to answer any questions. Give us a call at 707-998-0135 or email info@airkayaks.com. See all our inflatable kayaks, paddling gear and MTI vests at www.AirKayaks.com

njord building strip kayak bulkhead and seat sept 19 2010.wmv

October 31st, 2011 |

In my Cape Ann kayak, I did the bulkhead of plywood. After some years the wood has been rotted. I used usual silicone to attach and to seal it. It also didn’t last for long. Now I decided to do the bulkhead from Fiberglass, and to use epoxy instead of the silicone. It is much better, and also saves a lot of weight. Instead of pedals, I will install a wood board adjacent to the bulkhead. It will be my private kayak. and there is no need for adjustable pedals. It will save like half kilo which is a lot, and I think it will be more comfortable than the industrial pedals. The seat is manufacture of closed cell foam. Actually it is 8 layers of a camping matress glued by contact glue. I use a right angel disk with 60 grit sanding paper to shape it. When I finish to shape, I use 100 grit to achieve more delicate finish.

Pacific Action Kayak Sail Kits

October 28th, 2011 |

Now available at www.outdoorplay.com - Pacific Action sails were developed by kayak enthusiasts to enhance the paddling experience. These kayak sail kits have a twin-mast system that adds sail power under widely varying wind and sea conditions. They perform well across or down wind by adjusting the mast angles. Pacific Action sails are stable, reliable and have great versatility. To raise the sail, just unwrap from around the twin masts and release. The shock cord pulls the sail up in seconds! Adjust the sail angle using the trimming line. The sail can be easily lowered if the wind conditions become unstable and does not interfere with paddling whether in use, or furled on the deck. The sail kit integrates the wind with the sea. It is made from high quality synthetics for rugged durability and a clear panel for a see-through view. The sail mounts fit most sea kayaks, sit-on-top kayaks & canoes. Pacific Action Sail Kits “make paddling a breeze!”

How to Get In and Launch a Kayak Video

October 19th, 2011 |

www.rei.com Katie, an REI Outdoor School instructor, shows you how to get in and out of your kayak in this video—both launching from a dock and from a beach. From a dock: keep your center of gravity low, put your feet into the cockpit while holding onto the dock, and slide your feet into the cockpit, then slowly push yourself away from the dock and into the boat. To get out, do the same thing in reverse: Come up to the dock, lean up against it, pull your knees out of the cockpit, slide your legs out, and sit on the dock. To launch from a beach with a partner: Slide boat in so the cockpit’s at the edge of the water, step in while your partner holds the back of the boat steady and then pushes your boat out into the water. To launch from a beach by yourself, pull boat in so the cockpit is at the water’s edge, hold the paddle behind your back, bracing it between the back of the cockpit combing and the beach. Sit on the paddle shaft, keeping your body weight low while you then slide your feet into the cockpit. Put the spray skirt on. Place your paddle vertically in one hand and make a fist with the other. Push yourself off the beach using the paddle and your fist; it helps to use your hips. If you have a composite boat, do the same thing, but start with the boat out in the water so as to protect the bottom of the boat from rocks.

Money to buy a sailboat fast?!?

October 11th, 2011 |

Okay, so I’m 14 years old and I LOVE sailing. Unfortunately, the only time I can sail is one week during the summer, when we drive up to the lake and I use the sailing club’s boats. For the past couple of years, I’ve also been getting invited back for weekends to do racing during the fall. My overall favorite type of boat to sail is the JY. I definitely know my way around this boat, how to take care of it, rig it, sail it (duh) etc. We live on the river and go up to the lake a lot to visit my grandma. My dad has a few kayaks and a canoe but I’ve never really been into that kind of thing. Recently, a man in my town put up a JY for sale. It comes with all of the riggings, sails, and a trailer. It is in very good condition. The man is charging 00 for it, but says that he will go lower. That is an amazing price. I WANT THAT THING SO BAD. Both my brother and sister sail as well, so it would definitely get lots of use. JYs aren’t a high maintenance boat either. Unfortunately, I don’t have 00 just lying around. My mom has said that she’d love to have a sailboat but of course, my parents aren’t just going to randomly buy us a boat. Which sucks. I NEED TO MAKE MONEY FAST. Does anyone have any ideas?! I do have a job (working for my sailing instructor actually haha) but i only work 1 day a week for 3 hours so i dont get lots of money. I just started my job a month ago too. I don’t have enough saved up, and its for future savings anyways. I know, of course, that there’s no quick and easy way to magicly make large amounts of money with no effort, but does anyone have any ideas? thanks for reading this.

Help picking out a kayak for heavy person?

October 1st, 2011 |

I am a heavier gal and looking to get a kayak that would accommodate me. I am loosing weight, however I need something in the meantime + kayaking is good exercise. :) I am around 290 lbs and want to do flat water & river (nothing over class 2ish rapids) kayaking. I am looking at the Old Town Vapor 10 or Vapor 10XT kayak.

Would this be a good choice or can anyone else point me in the right direction?
I can’t spend over 0.

Thank you!
