This was the test run for the kayak-cam, the Flip Video camera that I mounted to the kayak via aa ballhead tripod head. While none of the footage is overwhelmingly spectacular, it did go to show the success of my modification. We went fishing at Buckshort Bridge in Mount Olive, Alabama. We didn’t catch any fish, but did learn to use the kayaks as platforms for jumping.

I have been using a side imaging sonar/fishfinder from Humminbird on my Ocean Kayak Trident 15 for a few years now. The unit scans the sea bed 200 feet either side of the kayak to build up a detailed 3D image of the surroundings. The footage can be recorded to an SD card, and then analysed on a PC at home. This video shows some of the software tools I use to analyse and display the footage. Including Humviewer and Sonar TRX - an amazing piece of software which allows you to superimpose side imaging footage on top of the Google Earth display and build up a picture of the sea bed using multiple side imaging recordings.

On the way there, we spotted a couple of whale watching boats, apparently L-Pod was swimming East, past Sooke, BC. For all you fisherman and women on the water this DIY Kayak Rod Holder I call it ((( The Wishbone ))) Kayak Rod Holder, because of it’s shape and hopefully it don’t break hahaha. ( MAKE A WISH , RIGHT ) LOL! It’s made of regular 1 1/4 pvc and 1 1/4 conduit pvc . For extra protection I attached on the bottom of the holder a 1 inch pvc cut 2 inches long both inserted it into the ends and cement it into the bottom. I added a 1 inch rubber stool bootie so it won’t damage the inner molded rod holder . This Rod Holder can hold 4 rod out of the way when not in use and hold 2 rods while your trolling or drifting for the big catch of the day.
