I am a 25 year old from a small Illinois tourist town. I have had many travels, some taking me around the world. As much as I do love my home town, which is in a beautiful area along the Mississippi, with great bluffs, hills and water, which have provided years of hiking, biking, cliff climbing, kayaking, canoeing, camping, etc… But I have thought about Colorado since I was 14. It has always just seemed to be the place to go and do everything I love to do. The only other place that I have picked up and actually moved to was Florida, it was difficult, but eventually worked out great, so I am not afraid of relocating.. I have many friends throughout the state of Colorado so am sure I could spend some time just wandering the state a bit before picking a spot to settle into. My main priority is finding a decent school, I’m studying environmental sciences. The other is that I am thinking of the cost of living out there, how difficult is it to find an outdoor job? I enjoy horticulture and landscaping, which I know is seasonal.. Ideally I know that I would be better off to wait until spring to go, but I want to be there on New Years… So is it impossible to find any enjoyable work in the winter, while the weathers crazy? also, it would be nice to find an area with a nice atmosphere, I am pretty much a guitar, hike, bike, kayak, long board, swim, dive, cave, climb, camp, nature pics, snowboard, garden, music lovin kinda guy and I really do enjoy a good time. ha
So I guess my questions are:

I’m planning to go on a kayaking tour which requires a surf zone launch. I’m a little skeptical about this due to a fear and my ability in swimming. Is there anything that I need to know to prepare myself? I understand I need to paddle pass the breakers, what are the chances of my kayak getting tipped over at the breakers? what should I do? Is it easier to launch during low tide?

I was on a shallow boggy river in Upstate New York. A bird about 1-1 and a half feet long was swimming on the water. Its feathers were grayish-white and extremly rumpled and messy. Its head was dark black and had a crest-like lump on its head (could just be feathers.) When I got closer it dove underwater to appear a few feet away seconds later. Please help me!

The French authorities appear to have legislation which prohibits a non-seaworthy vessel from coming within a certain distance of the shore. And the cross channel association seem to say that a support vessel is a requirement, but then they would because they have a vested interest in supplying their own boat which they charge for.

N.b EU citizens have free movement between EU countries, so no issue there.

I live in the Utica NY area and am wondering if anyone knows of some good local places to Kayak. I’ve been to Eaton Brook Reservoir, Leland’s Pond, Cazenovia Lake, the Moose River in Old Forge and also Nick’s Lake in Old Forge. Does anyone know of any other places that are near by? a week ago, we got 2 kayaks… mine is the yellow one. obviously, sit-on-top kayak’s are better suited for fishing, but also have a higher price. we got my quest for 9 at dicks sporting goods. nice kayak. my dad has the better ride as far as stability, storage, and tracking, but mine floats and get’s the job done. i rigged up a paddle holder, a crate with bungees, 2 rod holders and what not. can’t wait to try er’ out!!! for more info/ pictures, please visit: www.instructables.com
