I DON’T WANT TO GIVE MY SISTER THE WRONG ADVICE!

My sister is 20 years old and her boyfriend of 2 years is 21. They both are Army ROTC cadets and students. She’s a junior this year and he is a senior. They have good/excellent grades. And our parents hate the boyfriend! They feel he’s not ambitious enough (even though he’s the 3rd top cadet in the battalion) and that he hurts her grades (which isn’t true because her grades are good). Mostly the parents don’t like him because he isn’t the battalion commander’s favorite top-notch cadet. But I’ve met the guy (I’m 23, married, one daughter, and my parents hated my boyfriend-now husband) and I like him. He not only has rotc but is also a reservist with the national guard. He’s a river-rafting and kayaking guide in the summers. He built his own computer. He lives at home during the summer but pays his own phone bills and owns his own vehicle. He has a lot going for him!

So for the past year they told my parents they weren’t dating to make everything calm down, but dated secretly. Well, they snooped into her text messages and found out and all hell has broken loose! They’re demanding the guy apologize to them for dating their daughter. And they just keep yelling at her about how mad they are about it. Unfortunately my parents don’t know how to hate something but still have respect for their children’s choices.

My sister is on the edge of packing her stuff and moving out! And a part of me thinks that’s the best thing for her to do right now until they get ahold of themselves. Thats what I did when I went through a similar thing. I never kept my relationship secret, but when they made it clear they didn’t accept my choice, then I moved away.

Her boyfriend only lives 1.5 hours away so she can stay with him, or she can come the 4 hours down to live with me. But its not going to be easy since her campus is in the same town as home.

What should she do? What should I say to her?

obviously my sister is of an age where she should be able to date whomever she wants to. However, when our parents say they’re just giving good advice and sharing their wisdom, what they mean is "if you don’t do what we want you to do we’re gonna be mad and angry and make life hell till you give in. Because parents are always right no matter how old you are"
Townes: My sister would not be mooching. Rotc is a scholarship which means that neither her parents (nor her boyfriend’s) are paying a penny towards their education. It also pays them a stipend or income. No, building a computer isn’t a sign of ambition, but it shows some intelligence, most people have no idea whats even in a computer, let alone how to build one! And yes, many people, would consider pursuing a career as an officer in the military as well as already having a separate contract with the national guard to show ambition in life. Not everyone has to be a doctor or lawyer to be successful. He has straight A’s in his courses, as does my sister, so if there were any effect on their grades it certainly isn’t making them be low grades! She’s not saving thousands of dollars at home.

Frank, Geno, my wife Amy and I paddled the Youghiogeny from Connellsville to just above Dawson on 12/6/2009. The weather was fantastic, calm wind, sunny skies, and about 29 degrees. There was still a dusting of snow left over from the snow we got on the 5th. In the video, Frank (stern) and Geno (bow) can be seen enjoying the near perfect river conditions. We did some geocaching also. Fortunately no one went “swimming.” Frank did manage to break a paddle just after the video ended running the only rough section on this whole section of river, promptly douching Geno with a big splash over the bow. The paddle was the first activity undertaken by the Jacobs Creek Paddling Assoc. The Jacobs Creek Outfitters, located in West Overton Village is the site of our meetings, held the first Tuesday of each month at 7pm

The intro to inflatable kayaking trip is available on the rivers and lakes near REO. Usually we offer kayaking trips on the Nahatlatch in late July and August. Whitewater kayaking is the ultimate step up from rafting and is very popular with our Club REO multi-day vacations. We use inflatable kayaks that are easy to paddle, stable, and very forgiving with beginners. You will love running rapids right away without days of practice on the lake learning to roll a kayak (as required for standard hard-shell kayaks). If you fall out of an inflatable kayak, you only have to turn it over and jump back in. Our kayaking instructors are experts with many years of experience running rivers throughout the world. They will give you hands-on instruction and be by your side as you run the rapids. In case of a swim, they will be there to assist you. Obviously, participants must have good swimming ability. The instructors will determine which sections of river are suitable based on the lowest skill level in each group of paddlers (usually 3-5 per instructor). Thus, groups with children or beginners with no paddling experience will often do only the easiest sections. Groups of active adults with paddling experience, on the other hand, may be able to do most of the middle section of the Nahatlatch, which has numerous Class 3+ rapids.

I just bought two kayaks off of craigslist, and one of them is missing a foot pedal. As you kayaking experts would know (please be out there!), a foot pedal is where you put the ball of your foot, to keep from tipping over. You can adjust it based on your size, and it’s located near the bow of the kayak, on the inside where you put your legs. Does anyone know where I can find a spare one? A spare foot pedal, that is!

I see some people carry kayaks strapped flat to the roof/roof rack while others put the kayaks on their sides. I have a standard SUV roof rack (not a kayak rack) and I am wondering which way I should secure my kayak. I use locking cam straps and have laid the kayak flat in the past, but I’m open to change if there is better way. Any suggestions?
